A major spill and two pipeline shutdowns in Alaska helped sink BP's profits, down 1.5% last year. Not only did safety and repair costs increase, but the shutdowns reduced BP's oil production. The company was also forced to start selling its Russian venture, BP-TNK, under pressure from the Kremlin, resulting in a steep production drop in the fourth quarter.
