11. Lennar
Fortune 500 rank: 256
2007 loss: $1.94 billion

The Florida-based homebuilder just kept getting hit. Buyers cancelled 30% of their orders for new houses from Lennar last year. The average sales price fell from $315,000 to $297,000. In its mortgage-origination business, Lennar sold $2.8 billion fewer loans.

To bolster its balance sheet, Lennar cancelled many of its partnerships with other builders. It also hopes that Fannie's and Freddie's expanded loan buying will help restore confidence for homebuyers.
