Le Meurice, Paris
Rates: From $812

Highlights: A makeover of the public areas by Philippe Starck has breathed new life into this grande dame, which opened in 1835 and has hosted a succession of boldface names ever since (Salvador Dali slept here often). Those hoping to fit in some retail therapy between meetings can't do better than Le Meurice's location, convenient to both the Place de la Concorde and the Louvre on the Rue de Rivoli.

Business offerings include mobile phones, secretaries, and interpreters on request, plus a spa with fitness machines. And foodies will appreciate the restaurant helmed by brilliant young chef Yannick Alléno, who joined the hotel in 2003 and recently won his third Michelin star.

Don't miss: A meal at the opulent Restaurant Le Meurice, inspired by the Salon de la Paix at Versailles, with a dash of Philippe Starck thrown in.
