Buoyed by strong growth in Asia and the developing world, RBS earned $15.1 billion in 2007, or nearly $500 per second, in spite of writedowns linked to the credit crises.

However, the bank's massive $101 billion takeover of ABN Amro in October 2007 is yet to make any contributions to its bottom line.
