BP's profits slipped 5.3% in 2007. The company suffered a string of recent mishaps, including a deadly Texas refinery explosion, a major pipeline accident in Alaska and problems with a huge drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

But the company is making sizable investments in renewable technology, positioning itself for future profitability, which companies like Exxon are passing over. BP may have nowhere to go but up.
