2008: Flywire
The Flywire is Nike's lightest shoe to date. Inspired by cables on suspension bridges, the 0.2-pound shoe relies on high-strength threads made of multifilament yarn for support. The company unveiled the $90-$125 shoe this summer in conjunction with the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing. No word yet on whether the Flywire is a blockbuster, but CEO Mark Parker vows it will "reset the standard of performance" throughout the athletic-shoe business.
