Until this 1994 television spot by AMV BBDO, typical beer advertising usually featured three guys in a bar. By using the analogy of surfers, who patiently wait for the perfect wave,
the commercial turned a perceived negative about Guinness -- that you have to wait until the foam settles before drinking -- into a positive.
The pulsating music, the pounding surf, the horses, and the black and white footage all combined to create a sense of drama and anticipation that played perfectly into the tagline,
