Local industrial giant Johnson Controls, which makes automotive parts and building management systems, is working with Milwaukee Area Technical to build a solar education farm next year.

Associate Dean of Environmental Studies Joseph Jacobsen says the college intends to launch courses in photovoltaic cell design, installation, and site assessment. The planned facility -- which will be portable, says Jacobsen -- will contain 2,500 solar panels.

Despite the recession, the outlook for solar jobs is still bright due to government support and interest from large utilities.

Jacobsen says Milwaukee Area Technical students who study renewable energy benefit from the school's proximity to Johnson Controls. "[Its] headquarters is nearby," he says, "and it's looking for thousands of people."
