To stay healthy during an uncertain economy, Brocade Communications required its employees to take 10 additional days of unpaid time off during 2009 -- five during the first half of the year, and five during the latter half.

The network hardware and software maker said workers were amenable to the policy, viewing it as two more weeks of vacation allowance, albeit unpaid.

The move allowed Brocade to boost profits and hire new employees, expand its university recruitment program, and reward employees' patience with bonuses.
