The marketing department at Utz Quality Foods was watching the first season of Mad Men when they heard the character Peggy Olson tell her date that Sterling Cooper had the ad account for Utz. The real-life Utz company excitedly bombarded Mad Men with products related to their brand, and had their best hopes fulfilled when Utz appeared prominently on the show in season two.
Utz never paid for its involvement, only providing sample products and information on its brand history. The company said it was lucky that one of the show's writers was simply a
fan of their potato chips.
