$10.6 billion Extent of accounting errors made by Fannie Mae (Research) between 1998 and mid-2004. The giant mortgage financier has agreed to pay a $400 million penalty and freeze the growth of its $720 billion--plus loan portfolio.

19 Number of penguins (along with two sea otters) returned from Monterey, Calif., via a FedEx jet, to the Audubon Aquarium in New Orleans on May 22. The otherwise flightless birds were among the only survivors of 10,000 pre-Katrina inhabitants of the aquarium.
