The Priceline Negotiator must be busy. In August, the online travel-booking site famous for its "name your own price" scheme and TV spots featuring William Shatner reported a 71% jump in profit for the second quarter. The news sent shares of the dot-com survivor to their highest levels since the Internet boom a decade ago.

Driving the gains for Priceline was a spike in international hotel reservations made through two of its Internet properties. Connecticut-based Priceline.com acquired Booking.com, Europe's largest hotel reservation site, in 2004 and Agoda's Asian hotel booking service in 2007, as part of its global expansion plan.
