Why it's admired
Big Blue's decade-long transition away from hardware and into software and services continues apace: Its software business has nearly tripled in the past 10 years, and its services division continues stellar growth. In 2009, the company also bucked the recession and watched its stock climb 60%. Part of the reason: IBM is leading the Unix market in midrange servers -- beating Oracle and Intel -- and recently introduced the new Power7 chip, which runs four times faster than its predecessor. Who says big companies can't change -- or, for that matter, innovate? --C.T.
