Why it's admired
To combat slowing sales, the cheap chic discount retailer reduced inventory and cut costs. In an effort to compete with Wal-mart, Target aggressively cut prices. Steady revenue growth and increasing profits have helped the company's stock climb 85% in the past year to $51.Last May, the company's board successfully defended itself from a takeover attempt by hedge fund activist William Ackman. These moves collectively impressed the business community -- much as its hip wares still draw stylish bargain-hunting shoppers. --C.T.
