Like Altria, the giant international cigarette maker's reliance on premium brands in 2009 cut two ways. Philip Morris, which was spun off from Altria two years ago, shipped fewer cigarettes last year as Europeans traded Marlboros for cheaper brands.

But higher sales in Asia helped offset those declines, with cigarette shipments excluding acquisitions slipping just 1.5%.
