Company: Casey's General Stores
Fortune 500 Rank: 473

Robert Myers enlisted in the army back in 1966, and served for 22 years. His tours of duty took him to Germany, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. After he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1988, he took a job at Casey's General Stores as a facilities manager. Myers worked his way up the ranks at the company to become president in 2004, and then took over as CEO in 2006.

The company owns over 1,600 convenience stores spread out in small towns -- usually with a population under 5,000 -- in 11 Midwestern states. But the small town retail adds up -- Casey's General Stores has a market cap of over $2 billion.

Myers is involved in other business pursuits besides the retail chain. Since 2010, Myers has been the director of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, Iowa. He is also the business advisor to pro-evangelist nonprofit "Catholics Come Home Inc."
